06 October 2008 Year
A round table under the theme: "Existing legal guarantees for the
right to information in Ukraine and possible ways for the protection
and implementation of this right" was held at the premises of the
National Union of Journalists of Ukraine with the support of IMS on 25
September 2008. The event was organized by the Institute of Mass
Information in cooperation with the Media Law Institute and the
Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union.
The main goal of the round table was to raise public awareness of
the efforts of non-governmental organizations in the access to
information field and to discuss joint strategies of the civil society
actors to avoid duplications and achieve more comprehensive and
sustainable results in the area. Call for more activism
Mr Ihor Rozkladaj (Media Law Institute), Mr Roman Holovenko
(Institute of Mass Information), Mr Volodymyr Yavorskyi (Ukrainian
Helsinki Human Rights Union) and Ms Maryana Demkova (Center for
Political and Legal Reforms) performed as key-speakers of the round
table which was moderated by Ms Viktoria Syumar, Executive Director of
the Institute of Mass Information.
The presentations covered a number of issues ranging from access to
information by journalists and citizens, quality of public
administration performance, legal instruments and remedies for the
protection of right to information, an to the forthcoming legislative
reform planned in Ukraine.
The discussion focused on the need for the civil society to
consolidate its efforts to improve access to information and increase
transparency of public administration. There was general consensus that
these are crucial elements for Ukraine where not only citizens but even
journalists often do not show enough activism when protecting their
right to information in their interactions with public authorities. The
meeting also opened new perspectivies for further cooperation and
development of the non-governmental initiatives in the field.
